Hidden Truths
MISTD 2026
Academic research suggests the media often uses dramatic language in news reporting, with their selective use of primary data enabling them to influence and shape public perceptions. The project explores the relationship between typography and language and how this dynamic can be viewed through the media vs. Met Office.
The outcome questions the power and control the media has over the reader. French folds were used to conceal the ‘hidden truth’ containing the primary data from the Met Office. The media and the Met Office had very different designs to expose the power of language and visual pollution with a strict typographic system employed to aid in supporting this.
The Met Office data embodying the scientific report nature and media section were designed around the visual pollution. The front cover uses annual rainfall data and is de-bossed reflecting how choice in language creates lasting impressions.
