Surface Excess

Supermarkets are entangled with power, each product is placed with intent to influence the consumers decision with less attention played to the contents of the food. This project explores the relation between ingredients and fat percentage, each hole represents the fat percentage per serving size, focusing on purely the contents removing the visual pollution, power and branding.

Initial experimentation involved photographing supermarket shelves and pixelating the images to extract core colour trends. Throughout the book, die-cut holes physically represent the fat percentage of each food item, aiming to expose the hidden nutritional information and power dynamics behind food labeling.

GF Smith Colorplan paper was selected to mirror the visual pollution of supermarket shelves. Finally, the leftover paper circles were repurposed to create a companion book, symbolizing physical food separation and the highly manufactured nature of modern supermarkets.
